Prayer for self—and all mankind—ends breathing difficulty

After many years of good health, I became quite seriously ill with a respiratory ailment of some sort. I was alarmed at having great difficulty in breathing over a period of several days.

My Christian Science treatment led in interesting directions, uncovering various fears I hadn't even realized I had. But the deepening struggle to breathe was still frightening. I felt that something must be terribly wrong, because in the past, healing in our family had always come quickly.

I set about dispelling the frightful picture of illness with something very practical, something right at hand. I needed to practice the solo I was to sing for the upcoming Sunday church service. The lyrics of the solo I'd selected became the basis for my prayers. I dissected every phrase for its spiritual significance, applying it first to my own case, then expanding each idea to include all mankind. This spiritual study kept me busy, completely occupying my thoughts. The first verse of the solo, which is also a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 148), is:
