Always at home
FOR her placement examination for the senior year of high school (in Switzerland), the author had an essay assignment. It was this: "In your best handwriting, prepare an essay on home." It was written under "exam" conditions, and received favorable comments from the director of admissions. We thought Sentinel readers would enjoy these thoughts on home.
The condition and quality of our thought creates the atmosphere in which we live; the adage "Home is where the heart is" sheds light on the idea of home.
Having lived away from home for nearly three years, I have had to rethink my concept of home. However, even before I left for boarding school, I had an experience while living in Australia that has continued to help me over the years. During our second year there, just after I had turned twelve, my mother and I were at home one night when an intruder broke in. Although very little was stolen, every night during the next several months I became quite fearful. I felt so alone that my parents had to come home early from evening occasions in order for me to be able to sleep.
