Q A

What is the official position of the Church of Christ, Scientist, on the resurrection? I understand the symbolic message, rising above matter, and so forth, but does Christian Science teach that Jesus the Christ literally was in a grave and literally rose from a tomb? Since the literal resurrection is the center point to so many Christian beliefs, I was just curious as to whether the Church agrees that he did truly rise from the grave.

Christian Science agrees that the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension were historical events in the earthly career of Jesus. What is central to the teachings of Christian Science, however, is the spiritual lessons that can be learned about Christian living, about spiritual growth and healing, and about immortality from the events and ministry of Christ Jesus' life.

Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, established the Church of Christ, Scientist, "... to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."
