Why sit around Get to work
Making the most of waiting time
Waiting can try one's patience. It's tempting to blame someone else for causing our wait. There was a time when I wanted to blame the local economy for bringing a virtual halt to the real estate market in which my home had been for sale for over a year. Three times I had lowered the price drastically. I'd moved to another state and could ill afford to keep up the high interest payments on a second home.
One day, as I awaited a call promising to bring the final decision from a prospective buyer, I pondered the situation from an impersonal, more objective standpoint. In my practice of Christian Science, I had learned to know God as divine Principle, whose government is always at work. Mary Baker Eddy, in her book Unity of Good, speaks of God as "our helper." Also she says, "He has mercy upon us, and guides every event of our careers" (pp. 3—4). From this I saw that God as divine Principle is not cold and unfeeling. Principle is Love, and Love does indeed always guide us in a way we can understand, but it is up to us to follow this guidance.
I assured myself that this business would be resolved in a way that would benefit everyone involved. If I did not see how at the moment, I could at least acknowledge the truth of God's government. A favorite Bible passage came to mind: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov. 3:5, 6).
