One evening a year or so ago I took a course called "Writing dance," to prepare for teaching my new first-graders writing in the fall. At this time I noticed that my right arm was rather stiff. Then I discovered that a bone in my shoulder was in a rather odd position, and a few times I felt great pain in my arm, and it hung abnormally. Despite my prayers I could lift my arm only halfway up when the fall season arrived. I then turned to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment through prayer.
A hymn that comforted me and relieved me of fear (for I thought it could be anything from my having carried something too heavy and in the wrong way, to having something really seriously wrong with me) was Hymn No. 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal. The first verse reads:
In heavenly Love abiding,
No change my heart shall fear;
And safe is such confiding,
For nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me,
My heart may low be laid;
But God is round about me,
And can I be dismayed?
