When my youngest daughter was a sophomore in high school,...
When my youngest daughter was a sophomore in high school, her science class took a field trip to a lake one Friday. Their project was to plane small trees in the surrounding wooded area. The day following the trip she was covered from head to toe with a rash from poison ivy. She chose to treat this through Christian Science because she had witnessed so many healings as she was growing up. A Christian Science practitioner was contacted for treatment, and my daughter discussed with her what is true about the real man. The practitioner reminded my daughter that she is "the image and likeness of the patient, tender, and true, the One 'altogether lovely;'"—God (see Science and Health, p. 3).
As a parent I had to overcome my own fear and a false sense of responsibility. I needed to recognize that God was her true Father-Mother and that she was forever enfolded in His presence—so nothing could ever touch her but good. The Bible passage "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov. 3:5, 6) was my constant companion.
