AN INTERVIEW

Spiritual lessons for aspiring athletes

Glenn M. Linden has spent a good part of his life thinking about, praying about, and playing tennis. He has won many tournaments and was ranked number four in the state of Texas in the "over 65" seniors category last year. He has coached many nationally ranked athletes, several of whom have been highly ranked professionals. In addition to his athletic interests, Dr. Linden is an associate professor of history at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he has taught since 1968. He has written several books and holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington. Recently, Jan K. Keeler, a frequent contributor to the Sentinel, had an opportunity to discuss with Dr. Linden how Christian Science has helped him with his sport.

Has playing tennis always been easy for you?

Tennis was not difficult for me until I went to college and decided to try out for the varsity team. There, my performance remained at a consistently low level in practice matches. I seemed unable to improve, and it was really very discouraging.
