Eighteen years ago, after the difficult birth of my second child, I came home from the hospital in great physical and emotional distress. My husband, little boy, and other family members were kept away from us because they had been exposed to a contagious illness, and could not assist me. So I was alone with my new baby daughter.
My dear friend and former roommate—a Christian Scientist—agreed to stay with me until I could get around by myself. For several days she cheerfully cooked, kept me company, and patiently listened to my litany of physical complaints. Finally I felt I was reaching a crisis because the pain related to the birth was not abating, and I thought I would return to the hospital.
At midnight, in great distress, I tearfully asked my friend what she would do in my situation. I'd often seen her retreat to her room with her Christian Science books—the Bible and Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy—during times of difficulty. In a gentle voice she simply said, "Why don't I read to you for a few minutes?"
