AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

A cooperative advancement

For over a decade, The Christian Science Board of Directors, with the cooperation of nurses, nursing facility boards, and administrators throughout the world, has been devoting careful thought and attention to understanding better Mary Baker Eddy's provision for the Christian Science nurse. The spiritual nature of this ministry, the quiet watching, nurturing, and skillful assistance extended to those relying solely on divine Mind for healing, has a special place in our Church Manual, written by Mrs. Eddy, and is protected thereby from the influence of human opinion and conventional medicine.

The licensing laws of most states and many countries, as well as the federal Medicare program in the United States, require that facilities which render health-related services to the public be certified or accredited by a legally recognized entity. For years The Mother Church has performed these functions for Christian Science nursing facilities.

In 1993, after considerable thought and prayer, the Board of Directors decided to transfer the Church's role in accrediting and certifying these nursing facilities in order to focus on the Christian Science nurse as provided by Mrs. Eddy in Article VIII, Section 31, of the Manual of The Mother Church. This By-Law speaks to the church member who qualifies himself or herself as a nurse, and sets out the standard and requirements for nursing practice.
