Recently while I was praying specifically for our community, it became clear that I needed to express publicly my thanks for all the healings I have had through the practice of Christian Science. Despite my father's objection to its teachings, the persistent prayers of my mother brought to our family protection and healing, when medicine and drugs brought neither.

As a child, I naturally loved knowing that God is the source of love and health. I can recall my earliest prayer was to find freedom from fear of being diagnosed with a disease when examined by a doctor my father had me go to periodically. I remember repeating hymns by Mrs. Eddy silently while waiting in the doctor's office. Nothing was ever found but perfect health during these examinations. We had early healings of deep cuts, burns, a sprained ankle, tooth infection, colds, bee stings, sore throats, a slipped disk of the lower back, and a possible leg fracture. These all came without the use of medicine. The cumulative healing effect of my mother's steadfast commitment to practice Christian Science in her own life, despite severe opposition from various relatives, led my father to allow my brothers and me to attend a Christian Science Sunday School.

What joy and inspiration I found in learning more about God's great love for man. Perhaps the greatest gift was my healing of insecurity and extreme shyness in high school. I was not only able to become successful academically, but to participate on the cheerleading squad for two years. During this time a significant physical healing left a lasting impression on me, to this day. One day while practicing gymnastic floor stunts before class and without proper supervision, I fell and severely dislocated my knee. The pain was extreme and I could not talk. But the powerful sense of God's loving presence penetrated my thought right in the middle of that situation, and stilled my fear. Then my knee moved gently back into proper position.
