Like so many others, my first healing in Christian Science came...
Like so many others, my first healing in Christian Science came about solely from reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
On a cold winter day in 1972, I fell while riding a horse and landed on my back on frozen cornstalks. I was taken to a hospital, where X-rays revealed that not only was my back broken in three places, but I also had an arthritic condition that was causing my spine to disintegrate slowly. The doctor said that by my lying flat for six to eight weeks, the broken back would heal, but there was absolutely nothing that could be done about the degenerative arthritis. He also said my physical activities must be greatly restricted; there could be no more horseback riding, or for that matter anything that might jar my back. This came as quite a shock, as I had three young children and led a very active life.
Because of the discouraging medical diagnosis, I telephoned the only Christian Scientist I knew, to ask what she would do. (I knew very little about Christian Scientists, except that they "didn't go to doctors.") The next day she brought me Science and Health and a current copy of the Sentinel. She said not to worry if I didn't understand all I read, but just to keep reading.
