Church announces changes in shortwave broadcasting

On August 9, 1993, it was announced that the shortwave facilities of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, would be consolidated. Most of the Church's broadcasts from its transmitter in Maine are being shifted to South Carolina. Eventually the property in Maine will be sold and a new transmitter and antennas will be built in South Carolina. Foundations for the new transmitter were built at the time of the original construction in Carolina in anticipation of such a move. Expenses for this work will be covered by the sale of the site in Maine. The Church will continue to broadcast from its station in Saipan in the Mariana Islands.

A new broadcast schedule is expected to begin in September. A copy of this will be published soon in the Christian Science Sentinel and The Christian Science Journal. Those on our shortwave mailing list will be sent a copy as soon as it is ready. A major change will be a transition from two-hour blocks of programming to one-hour blocks. Weekdays, programming will continue to focus on the news while weekends will be devoted to religious broadcasts along with the Sunday church service. Religious broadcasts are currently aired in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, and Russian. Plans are underway to increase the Russian broadcasts from a monthly to a weekly format.
