God's government of our body
There is a way to demonstrate real control of our body—a spiritual way.
Christian Science teaches that it's possible and practical to demonstrate God's government of our body. To do this, we must obey the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Exodus). The commandment tells us that we should recognize Spirit as the only substance, the only genuine creator and governor of all creation.
The corollary to the acknowledgment of Spirit is the recognition of its expression, man. Because God, infinite Spirit, is the only real substance, the substance of man could not be something other than Spirit, called matter. Man must be the compound idea of Spirit itself. Thus the man created by Spirit is not material, having a physical structure; rather, he is wholly spiritual, existing as God's individual reflection, or idea. The first chapter of Genesis gives a clear picture of the man created by God, describing him as made in His image and likeness.
The writings of Paul point to his understanding of man as spiritual. For instance, in his second letter to the Corinthians, speaking figuratively of body, he says, "We know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
