The Mother-love of God in families and in government
In this fast-moving world, where there are many single-parent families, men as well as women are learning about mothering. Both parents these days help to feed and clothe the children, arbitrate between squabbling siblings, and discipline them when it is necessary; above all, they delight in their children's achievements and agonize over their shortcomings. At its best, mother-love, whether it is expressed by a man or a woman, often seems inexhaustible.
Ideally, parenthood expresses qualities which we naturally think of as having their source in God, divine Love—tenderness, constancy, and strength. The Bible furnishes us with clear glimpses of the Mother-love of God. We read in Isaiah, for example, "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you." The comfort that comes from God makes us feel tenderly cared for.
To love is to delight and joy in and to cherish the object of one's affection. So God, the creator of man and the spiritual universe, rejoices in His own creation, which the Scriptures tell us He sees as very good.
