One night I woke with severe stomach pain
One night I woke with severe stomach pain. I was grateful to have an understanding of God and of His omnipotence from my study of Christian Science. As a result, I decided to turn to God for healing.
Each time I struggled to turn my thoughts from my body to God, the pain would vanish. But when thought came back to the body, the pain was as strong as ever. I was reminded of Mary Baker Eddy's description in Science and Health of a lame actor who "hobbled every day to the theatre, and sat aching in his chair till his cue was spoken"; he would then begin "walking about as actively as the youngest member of the company." She refers to this actor's experience to support her previous description: "The effect of mortal mind on health and happiness is seen in this: If one turns away from the body with such absorbed interest as to forget it, the body experiences no pain." I was experiencing the truth of this statement.
However, at one moment when I was feeling the pain, a wave of fear seemed to engulf me. The question came to me, "What if this is a terribly serious illness? What if this pain marks the beginning of a losing fight with declining health and inevitable death?"
