At a regular dental checkup, I was informed my teenage daughter had seventeen cavities. Since she had been to the dentist six months previously, I found this hard to accept. But soon after, when she was away and complaining that her teeth hurt, she went to a dentist in another city. He found eleven cavities, and said X-rays would probably reveal more.

I had already begun to give some prayerful thought to the diagnosis after the earlier dental visit, and now I began doing some concentrated study in Christian Science, using Concordances to the Bible and to the works of Mary Baker Eddy to find healing ideas. One of my first thoughts was to look up references on space and fill, since according to the dictionary a cavity is an "unfilled space within a mass." Just looking at that definition alerted me to the spiritual counter fact to the problem—that God is omnipresent and fills all space.

Some of the particularly inspiring passages I found included these: "Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it"; "Let my mouth be filled with thy honour all the day" (Psalms); "The depth, breadth, height, might, majesty, and glory of infinite Love fill all space. That is enough!" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy)
