About twelve years ago I heard about Christian Science through a friend who had been a Christian Scientist for many years and who lives with her family in the western part of Germany. At that time she and her family came to visit me in my apartment in East Berlin. As she knew that I had health troubles, she brought me the book Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

At that time I knew Christian Science only by its name. I had been under medical treatment for about four years because of an illness of the lungs; this had involved lengthy stays in hospitals and constant medication. During my childhood I had been brought up in the Christian faith, but this had not led to a deeper understanding of God. Now I was grateful to learn that God is "a very present help in trouble" (Psalms).

I stopped taking the prescribed medication and began to pray. I also read Science and Health and practiced the Christian Science teachings contained therein. In the beginning I was afraid, but this fear was overcome through prayer, and I got better and better.
