What does it take to be happy? Is it money or companionship...
What does it take to be happy? Is it money or companionship or health? I know lots of people who "have it all" and yet are unhappy. I had an experience many years ago that taught me one of the most valuable lessons I ever learned—a lesson about happiness.
I had just graduated from college and was fortunate to get a job in a sales office in New York City. But I was miserable. My salary went toward my room and food, and I had little left for clothing or entertainment. I spent all my time working and trying to find something that would bring me happiness. I went to church occasionally, but my main motive was the hope that I would meet someone who would bring some joy to my life.
One Wednesday night I attended a service at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, in New York City. The readings were all about Christ Jesus—how he healed the sick, raised a young girl who had died, fed a multitude of hungry people, and so on. I thought to myself "What did Jesus ever do for himself? I don't remember reading that he went out and had a good time or did anything for himself. He was continually doing things for others. And yet he was the greatest man in every way. He was certainly joyous, and he knew God loved him."
