Metaphysical work
A local pond was covered with a thick layer of ice, and it just invited getting out there on it. Several yards from shore I heard a loud crack and pop. Images of ice breaking up and my going into icy water immediately sprang to mind. Well, it didn't happen. The sound wasn't that of ice giving way but rather of new ice forming and adjustments being made in the surface.
Funny, though, what I found myself thinking of next. Do you know how easy it is sometimes to think about a familiar person—even a Bible character—and feel that you've pretty much figured out him or her? I thought of the Apostle Peter and how I felt on the ice.
Remember how Peter and other disciples were in a ship one night when the winds were strong and the waves rough? They saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. Peter wanted to go to Jesus on the water, and Jesus said, "Come." Amazingly, Peter was able to take a few steps on the water; then, overcome by fear, he began to sink. The Master reached out and rescued him, and they both got into the ship.
