Last February my husband and I went on what should have...

Last February my husband and I went on what should have been a pleasant seven-mile hike in the mountains. We were dropped off at the starting point, which was itself remote. We had previously parked our own car at our final destination. So, once the hike began, there was no turning back.

For the first mile or so the hiking was pleasant, but the higher we climbed the more treacherous it became. Several times we lost our way because ice and snow, which we had not anticipated, covered the steep trail. We finally realized we were lost. We stopped to pray for God's guidance. We retraced our course a short distance and found a single set of frozen footprints from a hiker a day or two earlier. We were able to follow those along the mountain ridge. The problem of being lost was basically solved.

However, a much larger threat was looming. A freak arctic storm suddenly slammed down on the ridge. We were beaten by the wind. At a velocity we learned later was 150-plus miles an hour, it ripped clothing right off us and repeatedly knocked us to the ice. Twice I lost a hiking shoe but was so numb I didn't even know it. It may have been a small symbol of God's grace that my husband noticed it both times and was able to retrieve it.
