I can remember a time in my life, a few years ago, when I worked for a food service—cooking, making salads, and washing dishes. It certainly appeared as though that sort of work was all that I would ever do, since it was about all I had ever done, and I had been doing it for quite a few years.
Then my life began to take a different course. I became interested in management and started taking accounting classes evenings at a local community college. Little did I realize where this would lead. At that time about all I had in mind in connection with my education was to start my own business. I transferred to a large university, enrolled in a management program, and started attending days. At first I was interested merely in taking courses, but my interest grew to the point that I became a degree-seeking student, eventually with a double concentration. I was taking a full-time load and supporting myself as well.
This situation presented many challenges and led to much spiritual growth. Many times it appeared as though I would not make ends meet. On one occasion, for example, the end of a semester was nearing and I was several hundred dollars behind in my bills, including the rent. Then the engine in my car broke down and was not repairable. The car was a total loss.
