Years ago, when I was a young mother of two children, I suffered severely from abdominal pain. The medical diagnoses varied from a tubular pregnancy, to cysts, to a malformed uterus. Then, when all the prescribed treatments had brought no relief, the physicians advised a hysterectomy.
I was very fearful and in tears the afternoon I learned that surgery was recommended. But the friend who had taken care of my little girls while I kept the doctor's appointment consoled me with the news of a spiritual healing method. "Why don't you try Christian Science?" Her compassionate interest was tender and sincere. "What do I do?" I asked. "Trust in God," she replied simply, as she told me that Christian Science does heal.
She then read to me a poem written by Mary Baker Eddy. I thought those words were more beautiful than any I had ever heard. The opening lines are (Poems, p. 4):
