Unfamiliar roads and spiritual revolutions

The night was darker than anything I could remember as I traveled along an unfamiliar country road. I strained to make out shapes as the darkness soaked up the reflected light from the car's headlights. Finally I pulled to the side of the road, turned off the engine, and just listened.

Crickets and other night sounds blended into the stillness, and a warm summer breeze drifted through nearby trees. I looked up and the sight was stunning. Sharp pinpoints of light pierced the darkness. I realized the countryside was not really dark at all.

The sky glistened like a giant black canopy, engraved with "the point of a diamond"—to borrow the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah's phrase. I gazed in awe at its magnificence and wondered at the message a prophet might read in its laser-like calligraphy.
