Before Christian Science came into my life, I took six pills a day for high blood pressure. At night when I could not sleep, I'd take a drink of some alcoholic beverage, and if that didn't work, I'd take a cough syrup that promised a good night's sleep. I was caught up in the belief that for every human abomination there was a material remedy.
Since finding Christian Science and accepting its truths, I have had no need of medication of any sort—nor have I had a desire to consume alcohol. Prayer and the study of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, along with the prayerful assistance of a Christian Science practitioner, have healed me of the high blood pressure and the sleeplessness.
These healings came through the realization that God, Spirit, is man's Life. Especially helpful to me was this passage in Science and Health (pp. 373–374): "When the blood rushes madly through the veins or languidly creeps along its frozen channels, we call these conditions disease. This is a misconception. Mortal mind is producing the propulsion or the languor, and we prove this to be so when by mental means the circulation is changed, and returns to that standard which mortal mind has decided upon as essential for health." The healing of high blood pressure was verified by a medical examination required for a change in an insurance policy.
