Before I became a student of Christian Science, I developed...

Before I became a student of Christian Science, I developed a severe cold. A dear friend of my parents brought me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Although I did not feel I understood much of it, the chapter entitled "Prayer" made a great impression on me. The opening sentence states (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

The family physician examined me and believed it was necessary for me to have ear surgery. However, after I entered the hospital, nothing was found to treat; I was released. I returned to my teaching position, and there were no more health problems. I had been healed through reading Science and Health. From that time I have relied fully on Christian Science, and God has become my source of guidance and protection.

Eventually I was married and moved to another state. One day when father became seriously ill, my mother called me to come home. She told me the local physician felt my father should go to a distant city for examination and observation. All the way home I studied Science and Health in order to gain clearer understanding of man's relationship to God. I was grateful to have my father greet me at the train. After our arrival home I asked him if he would consider having the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner. He said, "I am willing to try anything."
