One of the greatest blessings a child can have is to be reared with the teachings of Christian Science. When I was two years old, my mother began the study of Science. She had been raised in a Protestant denomination and had much faith in God and in the power of prayer. At the time, I was the youngest of four children, and my father was making a meager living by selling patent medicines. He serviced a farming area by horse and buggy, which kept him away from home Monday through Friday.
At one point he developed rheumatism that was so severe he could not do his work. In desperation my mother asked a sister who had just started studying Christian Science if she thought Science could help my father. Her reply was that she thought it could, but that she could not tell Mother much about it, because it was so new to her. Mother, she said, should get the book, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and read it for herself.
We lived in a small rural town then, and the book had to be ordered by mail. The cost was five dollars. This was a great deal of money to my parents at that time. In fact, it was nearly all the money they had. Still they ordered the book. When it came, my mother began reading it right away. She read and read, though much of the book, she told me later, she did not understand. Some of it she did understand, however, and this gave both my parents hope. At the end of just one week my father was completely healed. He never had a return of the problem. In less than a year he was offered a well-paid position in a completely different business in which he was able to establish a trade that he worked in for the rest of his life.
