During my sophomore year in high school, the bottom of one of my feet began to swell and became inflamed. As the days went by the condition grew worse until I could no longer walk. Soon I was confined to bed.
As Christian Scientists, I and other members of my family were accustomed to overcoming adverse situations through prayer. My mother was both praying for me and caring for my physical needs. When the trouble did not yield readily, she called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help.
The practitioner asked to speak to me over the telephone, and I hobbled across the room to talk to her. What she said to me stands out to me today like church bells on a quiet Sunday morning. She asked if I could imagine how much my parents loved me. Then she said to multiply that parental love a million times and I might have some idea of how much God loves His children, including me. She went on to say that even a million times was a finite measurement; indeed God's love is infinite. It fills all space eternally and embraces each one of His ideas tenderly, nourishing and protecting His precious children.
