The opportunities of being raised in a home where Christian Science was taught and practiced and of attending a Christian Science Sunday School have been gifts for which I will always be grateful. The scientific prayer I began learning how to pray as a child has proved to be the only support I have needed when difficult times have occurred in my life.

During my eighth-grade year in junior high, one of my fingers was injured during a volleyball game. For several days the finger was painful and discolored. My mother had asked a Christian Science practitioner to help us through prayer, but I did very little praying about the situation myself. One day the infection appeared to worsen, and I asked my parents to take me home from a party we were attending. All the way home we sang hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal; I tried to concentrate on the truths of God rather than on the pain.

When we arrived home, my mother again called the practitioner, who encouraged me to pray the Lord's Prayer, slowly and thoughtfully, thinking about each word until I understood what I was saying and grasped its spiritual healing message (see Matt. 6:9–13). I was obedient, and after about the fourth time of thinking through what the prayer meant, I felt a real calm and peace and fell asleep.
