Several years ago, I was involved in a motorcycle accident while returning home from my night job. At forty miles per hour I failed to negotiate a curve. I hit a high concrete curb and was thrown quite a distance, landing on and skidding across the asphalt driveway of a gas station. Passers-by called an ambulance, and I was taken, unconscious, to the local hospital. Authorities there notified my wife. After informing them that we were Christian Scientists and that she would come to take me home, my wife called a Christian Science practitioner, who was most helpful in calming her fears.

I regained consciousness in the hospital about the same time the practitioner was asked to pray for me. Soon, against the protests of the hospital staff, I was taken home. The next three or four days I lapsed in and out of consciousness. When I was awake, breathing was extremely difficult and movement was painful. It appeared that several ribs were fractured or broken. There were also serious head wounds and extensive scrapes on my arms and legs.

However, this experience was an opportunity for each member of the family to utilize and deepen his understanding of Science. Our three children would often come to the bedside and talk with me, affirming aloud spiritual truths they had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School. A Christian Science nurse was called and came regularly to clean and bandage the wounds. Her cheerful manner and expectancy of healing encouraged us all to see beyond the physical picture of injury.
