My first healing in Christian Science was that of smoking

My first healing in Christian Science was that of smoking. It was an instantaneous healing, although previously there had been no desire to give up the habit. At the time of this healing I was under the stress of a nervous condition and I had many groundless fears and anxieties for the safety of my family and myself. Christian Science had healed my sister-in-law of the ill effects of a new drug prescribed by a doctor to cure a nervous disorder she had been suffering from. (Eventually she received her complete healing of the nervous disorder.) Out of gratitude she wished to share this healing truth with me.

One day this relative called to say that she was putting a copy of the Sentinel in the mail for me, and that she hoped I would read it. I said I would. When the magazine arrived, in keeping with my promise I settled down to read, after first lighting a cigarette. To my surprise the Sentinel had fallen open to a testimony telling of the healing of smoking. Healing had come after the testifier realized that enslavement to the tobacco habit was actually forming a smoke screen that kept her from perceiving her real spiritual selfhood.

This was a thought-provoking statement, and while pondering it, I unknowingly put out the cigarette. That was the end of smoking for me. And there has not been a desire to smoke in the thirty-five years since that first glimpse of Truth.
