During the influenza epidemic of the First World War, I was attending a boarding school near Philadelphia. The students who did not have the flu were sent home. As medical care was required by the school, the rest of the pupils, including me, were put in a dining room that had been turned into an infirmary.

One of my guardians (my parents were no longer living) was a Christian Science practitioner who resided near the school. When she was notified of my plight, I'm sure she immediately prayed for me and denied the belief that man could be anything other than whole and free. Later, after the disease had passed a crisis and I was on the mend, I learned that the medical people had apparently given me up, while Christian Science, as understood by the practitioner who was my guardian, pulled me through.

Several years ago I was injured internally while lifting something too heavy for me. I phoned a Christian Science practitioner, and she prayed for me. In this instance I did not seem to respond, and I lost twenty-five or thirty pounds. The practitioner had been faithfully working for me and felt that some progress should be evident, so we talked about it. After that, when the pain was quite severe, I found myself saying (Heb. 4: 12), "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword." This helped break the mesmerism, and I began to do my share of the prayerful study.
