"And we solemnly promise..."
When a person joins The Mother Church or one of its branches, he agrees to accept and support the Tenets of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy. These Tenets are found on page 497 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and at the beginning of her Manual of The Mother Church. The sixth and last tenet reads: "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure."
What a wonderful change would occur if all humanity were to accept this tenet and live it! Much as we might hope for such a Utopian goal, it cannot be brought about just by human reason. But individual Christian Scientists can and should accept this tenet as a key guideline for spiritual progress and salvation. And to the degree we fulfill the solemn promise, we will contribute to universal salvation.
Some may say, "Where is this Mind of Christ and how do we attain it?" Certainly we don't crusade like the knights of old in search of the Holy Grail. A Bible verse helps answer the question: "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."Rev. 3:20. This indicates that our job is to open our consciousness, to let in the Christ, which is waiting for you and me at all times, everywhere.
