Is more money really the answer?

Money is merely a medium of exchange and is not actual substance. The supply that God gives is no more in money than music is in a musical instrument. Subject to drastic changes in value, money is neither supply nor security. It is not true power, although we often allow our lives to be ruled by it. Materiality always involves a limited sense of supply.

As young parents, my husband and I found pleasure in indulging our children with whatever new items the market offered. At the same time we wondered why funds for necessities seemed to be lacking. Instead of more money we needed more wisdom, dominion, efficiency, and—above all—a better set of values.

Where were we placing our values? Isn't training a child to rely on more and more matter for happiness worse than futile? Can money be the real source of enjoyment when the love of it promotes greed, self-indulgence, and envy? Doesn't the constant yearning for more money preclude satisfaction?
