"Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank?"...

"Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank?" asks Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 266). I am very grateful that I can answer this question with an honest No. From time to time, since I first left home for college, I have done prayerful, metaphysical work for companionship and with increasing success.

At times during my college career I feared that I was losing every friend I ever had. Each of these periods strengthened my reliance on God as the source of my companionship. I knew that as God's perfect child, created by Him in His perfect image, I could never be separated from Him. This meant that I was always in a loving and harmonious atmosphere. It didn't matter who was physically near me; it only mattered that I express Godlike qualities and see divine Mind's qualities expressed by others, too.

The first time I was confronted with this problem it seemed that all my friends had plans that did not include a concert I wanted to attend! I was tempted to feel sorry for myself, but I corrected this attitude and immediately declared that God would supply my companionship. In that hour someone I hardly knew began trying to reach me, and we went to the concert together. From this I realized the importance of truly understanding the scientific concept of companionship, so I began to study it.
