"Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love," we read in...
"Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love," we read in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 57). This testimony is to express my gratitude for having early in my study of Christian Science gained some understanding of the source of true happiness.
In my early twenties I witnessed the healing of an older sister through Christian Science. She had been ill for several years, and the medical doctors had pronounced her illness incurable. When she was healed, our whole family was very glad for her, but when she tried to interest us in reading the textbook, Science and Health, we all said that we were not in need of such help as she had been. However, it was not very long before I came to realize that I did need this help. I went through a very unhappy time, and felt that there was no hope of again gaining any joy of living.
My parents were deeply religious, but with all their love and desire to help me, they could not give me much comfort. However, after a few weeks of listening to my sister talk of Christian Science, I wanted to know more, so I began to read Science and Health and the articles and testimonies in The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. After a time I began to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. Gradually I gained some understanding of the omnipresence of God, divine Love, and saw that there was a solution to my problem. I was still so immersed in self-pity and other traits of self, however, that I was very despondent most of the time, and this was manifested in irritation and spells of weeping. This state of things continued for several months.
