A Home Needs both Martha and Mary

"I am not patient with a speck of dirt," Science and Health, p. 413; affirmed Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. And members of her household who observed how meticulously she cared for domestic details sometimes commented on the high standard she set for them in human as well as spiritual matters. Order, cleanliness, and punctuality were established rules in her home, and obedience to them contributed greatly to the peaceful atmosphere required for the accomplishment of the vital, spiritual work that was the primary activity there.

In the household many visitors came and went each day; secretaries worked diligently to handle the vast, worldwide correspondence; vital questions concerning the affairs of the Christian Science movement and its many activities were researched and resolved. A dozen or more people lived there as a family, worked there as a team, and prayed daily for deeper, clearer understanding of God and for the spiritual and human welfare of the entire world.

In such a home a good system of government expressed in an intelligent routine was essential if they were to accomplish all they had to do. Discord and disorder in the domestic arrangements could not be allowed to hinder the vital spiritual purpose that was their primary concern—that of proving that Soul is supreme and sense has no place.
