As a teen-ager, nearly fifty years ago, I started to attend the Christian Science Sunday School. Here I began to glimpse something of the wonderful freedom and joy of recognizing man as the beloved child of God instead of as a miserable sinner, which had been the basis of my previous orthodox Sunday School teaching.
At once I began to apply this new concept of living, and many small experiences followed, proving to me that, as the Master, Christ Jesus, said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Christ Jesus' example came alive to me, and I began to understand him as the great Exemplar, to be not only revered but followed.
There have been many proofs in our home that Christian Science heals—in my own experience, my husband's, and during the period our two children were growing up. These healings have included measles, whooping cough, sprains, a heart condition, and a severe arthritic condition in the right arm.
It became necessary for me to have a medical examination because of a business matter in which I was a partner. For several years prior to this I had been having a recurring problem I had not really faced up to in my prayerful work. But the woman doctor to whom I went for this examination questioned me very thoroughly, and when I admitted this situation, making very light of it, she took quite a serious view of it and on further examination told me I had a fibroid tumor. She said the condition would never clear but would get progressively worse, and she recommended an operation as soon as possible. She also said she would have to report it on the form she was filling in for the insurance company.
Not for a moment did I accept the picture she painted, but I realized I must pray to see more clearly that such a condition was no part of man created in the image and likeness of God. I also knew that as Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 463): "'A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." I had not the slightest doubt that the condition would be healed in Christian Science.
Not very long after this I awoke one morning feeling a familiar weakness and hemorrhaging very badly. I forced myself to sit up and started to study the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. I was not really taking in very much of what I was reading, until my thought was arrested by this statement from Science and Health (p. 249): "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy. Let us rejoice that we are subject to the divine 'powers that be.'" Suddenly I felt such a sense of joy that I said out loud, "Why, I have never been subject to this at all. I am 'subject to the divine "powers that be."' Fancy me accepting this for so many years!" I finished the lesson and then dressed and carried on with my daily duties as I had always done. Never again did the physical condition recur. This healing took place about nine years ago.
Is it any wonder that students of Christian Science are grateful to Mrs. Eddy for selflessly sharing her discovery of Christian Science for the benefit of mankind, giving us a better understanding and appreciation of the Bible and the works and life of Christ Jesus and an understanding of God as our Father-Mother, divine Love, omnipotent and omnipresent!

I am indeed happy to confirm my wife's testimony and to join with her in expressing sincere gratitude for the very many blessings our family have received and been able to share with others through the knowledge and practice of the teachings of Christian Science.
