Christian Science came to me when I was in my early teens
Christian Science came to me when I was in my early teens. My mother, who was very ill with erysipelas, remembered what her sister had told her of Christian Science and decided to have Christian Science treatment for herself. The practitioner came to our house and spent about an hour with her. My mother was healed. She ate steak for supper, although she hadn't been able to chew anything for a week or more. To say that we were grateful is putting it mildly.
My mother attended the church services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and we children were enrolled in its Sunday School. She began earnestly to study her Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Through the understanding of God she was gaining she was able to handle most of the problems that came to us, from cuts and bruises to contagious diseases.
When my sister was about twelve years old, she had a very painful and swollen condition on one side of her head and in her ear. My mother prayed earnestly for her in Christian Science. This statement was especially inspiring (Science and Health, p. 393): "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." The pain and swelling left, and my sister's face was normal again. However, when she became a grown woman, she seemed to be slightly hard of hearing in this ear. The suggestion that this was a result of the childhood trouble was prayerfully denied with the firm conviction that Christian Science heals permanently and completely, and her hearing became normal and has remained so for over twenty-five years.
