Hear What God Is Saying

God is always saying something wonderful! He is always communicating His ideas to us, His children. These ideas are purely spiritual, but they have the practical effect of solving our problems and meeting our needs. If we want to hear Him consistently in answered prayer, in guidance, inspiration, healing, it's our business to find out how to receive His communications.

Actually, hearing God requires much the same preparation as hearing anything lovely—music, for instance—except that it's done from a spiritual standpoint instead of a material one. When we know that there's something good to listen to, we first of all put ourselves in the right place to hear it. Then we get rid of all outside noise, all interference. And we become still ourselves, for we need to be attentive to get the most from what we're hearing.

In his famous Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus spoke of entering "into thy closet" to pray. He said, "When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret." Matt. 6:6; If we want to hear God, that's where we need to go. Not, of course, into the clothes closet. In Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook, Mrs. Eddy makes this allusion to the "closet": "In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness." Science and Health, p. 15;
