As a young man on the threshold of my business career, I was struck down by crippling illness and great weakness.

For about two years I tried many kinds of treatments. I spent months in a hydropathic establishment, having baths, massage, and electrical manipulation, but there was no lasting improvement. Exercise cure and rest cure likewise proved abortive. Finally an experienced doctor, who was acquainted with my family history, told me that I must not expect to be able to return to work, but that with patience I might get used to the pain. This roused me. I was determined not to give in to becoming an invalid.
