My mother learned to love the teachings of Christian Science before I was born...
My mother learned to love the teachings of Christian Science before I was born, so it was natural for her to enroll me in a Christian Science Sunday School as soon as possible. She found articles in the Christian Science periodicals a tremendous help in dealing with problems which arose. There was little money for food or clothing, but she paid the subscriptions for these periodicals first, always finding that when she trusted divine Love in this way great blessings followed and all our human needs were met.
I am grateful for my mother's absolute reliance on Christian Science, which resulted in many quick and complete healings in our home. I was healed of acute tonsillitis and a deeply cut leg, of so-called children's diseases, burns, and colds, and of sickness that was never diagnosed. I had an instantaneous healing of a severely injured foot.
The wonderful opportunity to have class instruction early was gratefully taken, and the loving counsel of my teacher over the years since then has proved invaluable.
I would like to relate a healing which took place four years ago. I was enjoying a week of rest and study at a Christian Science House when quite suddenly I was seized with an acute pain in my knee. At first I was afraid of several things. I feared the condition, that it would be noticed, that I would need nursing care, and that I would not be able to pay a visit to my mother's home. I asked for help in Christian Science from a practitioner.
It was clearly pointed out to me that I needed to obey Article VIII, Section 6, of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy and to defend myself daily against aggressive mental suggestion. The article reads: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged,—and justified or condemned." The imperative demand "Now will you do that?" woke me up, and I determined to do all I could in this way.
I was reminded of the comforting words of the Psalmist (Ps. 91:9, 10), "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." It was the word "because" that stood out to me and helped me accept the truth that the healing was inevitable because I could understand that as St. Paul writes (Acts 17:28), "In him"—in God—"we live, and move, and have our being."
The condition was so painful during that night that I could not sleep or even turn on the bed. There was plenty of time during the next two days to pray and study, and I did this gladly. When the time came for me to leave, there was much less pain and fear, and I could move sufficiently to drive the car. I was grateful that the difficulty in walking was not noticed.
I continued to do more defensive work and felt strengthened. Early the next morning I wakened and opened my books to study the Lesson-Sermon for the week. While I was reading, my mother came in to ask if I would prune the apple tree that day. For a moment the idea seemed absurd. I was about to say that I could not possibly do that; then I recognized the fear as aggressive mental suggestion and said instead, "Of course, I'd love to." After completing the study of the Bible Lesson, I got out of bed to find all pain entirely gone. I ran up and down stairs to prove it was really so! I pruned the tree with ease and joy, and there has been no return of the difficulty.
I am deeply grateful for Christian Science, for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy for giving this precious truth to the world.
