When Fog Rolls In

Sitting at a large picture window studying the weekly Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly, I glanced up. The picture of loveliness that presented itself was almost breathtaking. A calm, unruffled lake was surrounded by green trees and shrubbery tinged with early fall coloring. A brilliant sun shining on all made it an unforgettable sight.

The subject of the lesson that week was "Reality." While I sat there drinking in the beauty of the picture before me, I gave thanks aloud that, to use the words of the Psalm, my eyes had been opened and I could "behold wondrous things out of thy law" Ps. 119:18; —wondrous things, such as calmness, serenity, and beauty. I knew that these are attributes of Soul, one of the synonyms Mrs. Eddy has given us for God.

Suddenly, with no apparent warning, dark clouds swept across the sky, obliterating the sun. Fog rolled in. It was as if "there went up a mist from the earth," Gen. 2:6; and all the beauty was wiped out. Had the lake evaporated? Had the trees and shrubbery forever lost their brilliant, warm colors? Was beauty forever destroyed? Of course not!
