Signs of the Times

The Albertan

From "Don't Fear Tomorrow" an editorial in The Albertan Calgary, Alberta, Canada

We are living in one of the greatest revolutionary epochs of human history, when vast new upheavals are breaking through the crust of man's knowledge, dynamic social concepts are emerging, ancient prejudices and privileges are challenged, horizons are everywhere expanding, and most dangerous of all—values are shifting and changing ....

For some the challenge is excessive and they see the darkness of nuclear clouds and racial conflicts, revolution and evil, hatred and trouble. Others see the birth of a new world and a new age, a time of revelation and radiance, when the power and grace of God flood the universe with glorious meaning and light.

Some tell us that we are on the edge of the abyss, inevitably sinking into another Dark Age, while others envision the emergence of a wondrous compassion, the birth of a new humanity and unlimited opportunities for health and joy.

... We need indomitable minds who look at the worst and still believe that the world has a good meaning, unsinkable hearts that are supported by love and goodness, and sensitive souls assured that what is lovely is eternal, what is right is invincible.

Cynicism is a coward's refuge, bitterness is the burrow for the weakhearted, and despair is the escape of the spiritually bankrupt and the visually blind. The future belongs to the explorers who believe that beyond this complex, confused life lie harmony and order, beyond the problems of hatred and war lies peace, and beyond the suffering and cruelty we shall come at last to the land of the heart's desire ....

The Kingdom of God belongs, not to the clever, but to the valiant, to unconquerable spirits who pass through anguish without surrendering the soul's invincible surmise that love is greater than hate and faith is truer than doubt, that our dreams are not doomed to be vanquished by the might of evil, but destined to final victory and consummation. "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
