RADIO PROGRAM No. 90 - What Is Christmas?
[This is the third of a special group of programs on the subject, "The Meaning of Christmas."]
INTERVIEWER: I think many people wonder if there isn't something more vital to Christmas than sending cards, singing carols, or remembering the festivities of childhood. People sometimes wonder whether the Christmas message is only a myth and Christianity has failed. I ran across something recently that sums up the feeling of many people, I think. It's in the book "Honest to God." The author, Dr. John A. T. Robinson, says, "Most people would genuinely like to believe the Christmas story, but wonder whether it can be true with the world as it is after nearly two thousand years." How is Christmas viewed by the Christian Scientist?
SPEAKER: As you've implied, we miss the meaning of Christmas and the promise it symbolizes if we think of it just in terms of tradition or gift-giving. And so I hope in this program we can look beyond the more obvious things to the deeper meaning of Christmas. Because Christmas is not merely a day on the calendar. It honors the Christ-power which was taught and lived by Christ Jesus, the greatest power for good we could ever know. The power of divine Truth has not become obsolete. It hasn't failed, but the trouble is that too often it just hasn't been tried. It's interesting to note that Jesus rested his case for Christianity on the works. And the works really consisted of two things. One, the living of his precepts. And two, the natural, unmistakable results of this in the form of healing, of freedom and dominion.
