A Helpful Breathing Spell

Scientific research and experiment have almost overnight placed in men's hands more potentially destructive power than they know what to do with. As a result there is an increasing tendency on the part of thoughtful people to turn to moral and spiritual values with the hope that with these the scientific achievements of this age will not become a horrible blight upon our civilization. These people are mindful of the fact that a substantial portion of the world's population looks to Christianity to lead the way to "on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14).

Many individuals question the need of greater development of nuclear power until we are better able to utilize it wisely. In fact, they would welcome a moratorium on excessive efforts along this line, or even complete stoppage. It might not be possible to stop where we are, but would it not be helpful to have a breathing spell—a period in which men's need of moral and spiritual qualities could be adequately considered and dealt with?

While physical scientists have been investigating the forces of nature, Christian Scientists have been successfully acquainting themselves with spiritual forces, to which the world must eventually turn if it is to enjoy the dominion over the earth that was bestowed on man in the beginning. This dominion is something that must be spiritually demonstrated rather than humanly achieved, and only in this dominion will lasting peace, security, and progress be found.
