CONCERNING REPENTANCE

In an article in the Spectator of London, England, Sir William Hamilton Fyfe wrote in reference to the Greek Testament, "From it I learnt for the first time that repentance meant, not just being sorry for my sins ... but a clean change of mind and heart ... that salvation denotes a state of spiritual health rather than a free pass into heaven."

Jesus said (Matt. 4:17), "Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." His life and mighty works were the outcome of his way of thinking, which was based upon his continuous understanding of God's allness. The Master had no need of repentance, no need of change of mind, for he reflected the one infinite Mind, God, in all his ways and works. He knew that God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil" (Hab. 1:13), and he saw man as God created him, perfect and sinless, the image and likeness of his Maker.

Christian Science avers that immediate healing resulted from Jesus' profound understanding of the almighty power of God, Love, and the nature of man as God's likeness. This understanding also explains his rejection of mortal appearances as unreal. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, whoappeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick." She also says (ibid., p. 210), "Jesus healed sickness and sin by one and the same metaphysical process."
