What About Human Relationships?

We have often heard it said that the healing of world relationships is an individual matter and will take place only as individuals lift up the standard of brotherly love. We, as Christian Scientists, know that this is true; that everything, so far as we are concerned, takes place in our own consciousness. There is, in other words, no world problem hanging out in space somewhere to which we are only remotely related. We have simply to deal in our own thinking with that which we have accepted as a world problem.

We know that the dispelling of the belief of a sick, sinning, and unhappy world is mandatory upon us, and that we fulfill this demand as we meet with truth every phase of discordant human relationship that is presented to us. In other words, this healing work begins with the relationships in our home, our business, our church, community, and country. What are we doing to improve human relations at these points? Do negative qualities such as suspicion, jealousy, selfishness, and domination have leading roles here? Or can we honestly say that understanding and helpfulness prevail?

Selfishness is at the bottom of most of the inharmonies in human relationships. When through earnest desire and prayer we correct the desire to aggrandize a mortal ego, and to indulge opinionated beliefs that look away from God to matter, we silence the claim of a false sense of self and let God govern. We deny the existence of any power apart from God. Thus we listen for the voice of Truth to tell us what to do and the way to go.
