Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Channel Islands

Under normal conditions a report is issued each year from local Committees on Publication, showing some of the ways by means of which a truer conception of Christian Science is presented to the public. This report covers the period of the war when these islands were in enemy hands, and in consequence deals with a different set of circumstances from those normally commented upon.

Throughout the period under review the newspapers have been very kind to us. From October, 1939, until our occupation in June, 1940, reports of lectures, Thanksgiving services, and excerpts from the weekly Lesson-Sermons were printed regularly in a good position. A report of our Sunday service on the King's Day of Prayer in May, 1940, was taken to the newspaper offices on Sunday night with a covering letter pointing out the urgency of a united ecclesiastical front, and the necessity for churches to act together in this very important matter. This report was printed in full. Quite a number of reprints from The Christian Science Monitor were published at this time, due credit being given. A month later, during the stress of evacuation to England of a good proportion of our population, and also on the day after a serious air raid on Guernsey harbor and town, the excerpt from the Lesson-Sermon appeared in its regular place in our papers.
