If Christian Science had never done anything for me...
If Christian Science had never done anything for me other than to give me a clearer concept of what God really is, I should never cease to be grateful. When very young I was a member of an orthodox Sunday school, but the thought of God that I had not only roused fear in my consciousness but an indescribable sense of hatred every time the word was mentioned. When still quite a young girl, as a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School, I learned that God is Love, as Mrs. Eddy tells us many times in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and my whole outlook on life changed. That this teaching is the truth was never doubted, but at that time I was not ready or willing to make the teachings applicable to my daily living. Not until the fall of 1918, during the so-called influenza epidemic, when death seemed inevitable, was I ready to ask for help in Christian Science. This case was met quickly, although it was about a month before all the after effects completely disappeared.
I am grateful that necessity has demanded that I learn more of God, and apply this understanding more and more each day. Many times, to the human senses, conditions have seemed dark and disagreeable, but there was always one thing for which I could be grateful, and that was that I had Christian Science with which to work out my problem. Without it I should have had neither the desire nor the strength to rise above them.
Christian Science is teaching us what God is and man's relationship to Him, whereby we may prove, here and now, the Psalmist's statement that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Christian Science has proved this in our home on innumerable occasions and in many ways, and I am daily more and more grateful for this Science.
