Question and Answer

Do Christian Scientists claim to be better than other Christians?

The true Christian Scientist claims nothing for himself, but everything for God. He finds so much to do in working out his own salvation and helping the needy who apply to him, that he has little time to compare himself with others. The Christian Scientist knows that if he has received more light than others, more is required of him. He must do more and better work, and his whole time and energy are required in doing the work assigned him.

The Science of Christianity is undoubtedly the highest teaching of Christianity, just as the sciences of music and mathematics convey a clearer idea of these subjects than can be gained in any other way. But for one who calls himself a Christian Scientist to say that because he has discerned somewhat of the Science of Christianity he is a better Christian than one who has not, would be as unreasonable as for the soldier of 1899 to say that, because he has better firearms, he is a better soldier than the soldier of 1776.
